I’ve had more than a few managers since I started working. Yes, it’s true that no one is perfect, but this is something that I’ve been thinking about for quite some time. Some people are simply not cut out to be managers, though they might not even realize that. There are certain things that you just shouldn’t do if you are a manager.
Never raise your voice to your employees. No one likes to be yelled at. It doesn’t matter if you’re intending to raise your voice or not, you should always make sure to keep your voice even when dealing with your employees.
Practice what you preach. Don’t tell your employees to do something, and then turn around and do exactly what you told them not to. That will cause them not to respect you, which in turn, will mean that they won’t want to listen. For instance, don’t tell them no personal phone calls, and then turn around call your best friend for no reason.
Don’t let personal feelings affect how you deal with your employees. Even if you do not personally like someone for whatever reason… as long as they’re doing their job the way they’re supposed to, why say anything?
No favoritism. This is something that I’ve seen a lot… and no matter if you like one employee better than the other, treat everyone the same. Favoritism is a good way to lose employees.
Know your job. There is nothing I hate more than a manager who doesn’t know how to work in their store or company. One of your employees should never know more than you, and if they do, then there’s a problem. I understand that sometimes managers are hired from outside the company, but make an effort to learn everything so that you can tell your employees what to do, and not the other way around.
I have had these problems with former managers, and found them the most common and most annoying. It’s also worth noting to listen to your employees and don’t fire them for no reason… and don’t look for a reason to fire them. I think that goes with saying, but I guess you never know, do you?
